The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
