Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
