The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, announced that he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series showcasing causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest development deepens the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new product line is being created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
