The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
At least 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
