The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the popular series reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
