The saga started with a solitary photograph, arguably the most consequential ever captured of a member of the monarchy.

In the frame appeared the Duke of York, standing closely beside a female youth, while a companion smiled suggestively in the backdrop.

Without that snapshot, captured at a social event in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the claims of a teenager who stated she was trafficked across the Atlantic and compelled to have perfunctory intimate contact with a individual of the royal family?

A strange, telling gesture by someone who had publicly stated to have not been aware of her, said he could never have had sex with her, and yet provided a large amount of family resources to avert a protracted lawsuit.

Years of Controversy

In this context, conversations of the royal family acting swiftly to distance themselves from Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has persisted for the better part of 15 years since that image, and an additional snapshot of Andrew ambling amiably with a convicted sex offender came to light.

• Hubris: For what duration did his brothers and sisters, possibly even his mother and father, know that Andrew was so self-entitled?

Trips were documented in royal annual reports: helicopter transfers from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, private flights instead of commercial flights, all for the benefit of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Additionally the entitlement which required deference when he walked into a space or the supreme consciousness about his designations used on his correspondence in messages to his personal acquaintances.

Society (and the press) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was nobody of any significance to defend him, a consequence of all those years of hubris.

Institutional Fears

The wiser family members recognized that. The primary concern is to pass on the monarchy, if not as before at least complete and unblemished.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to reverse the image of earlier rulers, proving they are beneficial, dutiful and reactive to their people.

His actions endangered all that in danger in an era when deference and secrecy is no longer sufficient.

Consequences

Eventually, the notoriously hesitant monarch was prodded further. There was no alternative. The palace had relinquished authority of the narrative.

Currently the loss of honorifics and the persistent and permanent personal shame that will afflict Andrew most severely.

• Demotion: Reduced to just a private citizen
• Historical Precedent: The primary royal to forfeit his designations in modern times
• Military Service: Especially painful given his duty in the Falklands war

He remains a royal advisor, theoretically able to substitute for the king, and he is still eighth in line to the throne, but none of these will truly happen.

Future Prospects

Do individuals he comes across still defer to him? Could they still make mistakes and call him Your Highness? Might they say Sir,

Certainly, he is not moving to suburbia, but to the sovereign's large estate at Sandringham.

In that place, he will be furnished by the sovereign with one of the royal residences and given some sort of financial support.

It is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a token payment for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit distant, but even so it may not be far enough.
