Shock as Popular South African DJ Killed in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The reason behind the attack remains unclear and no arrests have been made, as per the official statement.
The Fatal Incident
Authorities revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a premises near the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the property overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, according to reports.
"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the incident.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.
Appeal for Witnesses
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to determine their location," added an official.
Outpouring of Grief
His sister, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.
"I am in shock. I am shattered," were her words.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were willing to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the public to avoid sharing graphic images from the incident, saying this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including protective services, supplying elite guarding services and protecting major functions across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in building administration and assisted with tenant removals.
National Shock
His murder has sent the nation reeling and triggered an wave of remembrances from his fans, the authorities and political parties.
A cabinet official remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.
"He spoke his truth boldly and honestly. He even criticized me and my actions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we should be," the minister added.
A party figurehead said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".
A media executive expressed that "Stock was far beyond a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every moment on screen. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his influence "will be remembered".

South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the world's highest murder rates, driven by theft-related violence and organized criminal activity, with some 63 people losing their lives per day in a recent six-month period, as per police data.
