Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been put on hold.

Background Context

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had pressured him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would merely represent a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that involve the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he remarked.
