NY Unveils Online Platform for Public to Submit ICE Footage After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has launched a new digital platform urging locals to share images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This action comes just a day after a significant immigration operation disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking widespread protests.
US Citizens Arrested In Raid
A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were detained and kept for "about 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents deserves to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and documented federal operations recently, I encourage you to share that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."
Submission Process
The form provides fields to send photos and videos of the operation, plus a area to specify location information. Prior to sending, individuals must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say featured dozens of ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known district of Manhattan where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are regularly available en masse – typically to tourists.
Recordings of the operation show numerous covered and weaponized federal agents zip-tying and detaining a man, and forcing aside bystanders. Throngs of locals followed the officers through the streets. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
In a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a lawmaker, stated that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be taken for unjustly." He noted the persons were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This constitutes a armed campaign to incite tension. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for this administration to deploy the troops to halt unrest that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation quickly spread – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government chooses oppressive displays that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate stated.
New York City advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.
"Immigration agents descended on the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and riot gear to go after street vendors working to survive. This operation had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the head of a rights organization.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules prohibits the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it does not apprehend citizens. However, external research has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities during the period of the existing leadership.
Ongoing Trend
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in the state and across the US recently.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the present government. Protests targeting federal operations are widespread along with allegations of violence and abusive practices.
Recently, a document filed by advocacy organizations stated inadequate care of women with child in detention centers.
