LA Battles Historic High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Storm.
In the wake of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now confronting unusually warm conditions for the end of February.
Record-Setting Heat
On Friday midday, the mercury soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, as reported by meteorologists. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on forecast charts for the region.
Safety Warnings
The weather service issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their recommendations featured:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Reversal
This dramatic increase in temperature follows closely after a powerful winter storm that battered the region recently. That storm brought heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, leading to evacuation orders for millions residents.
Tragically, the conditions also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict a cooldown is coming. Temperatures were forecast to decrease to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by late Friday.
Several cities that experienced the 90-degree mark included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to see the high eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can anticipate temperatures in the eighties, with a further cooldown expected for the start of March.
