Jurgen Klopp says coming back to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that a future comeback is an option. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful nine-season tenure featuring a European Cup triumph and the Premier League crown in 30 years, now holds roles overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and as an advisor for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title under Arne Slot, but many fans who adore the manager would welcome the possibility that he might come back one day. During an extensive chat, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I said I refuse to lead a different club on English soil. So that means if then it’s Liverpool...yes. It's plausible.”
“I’m 58, so I could make the decision in a few years, who knows. Must I choose now? If so, I wouldn't return. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch what lies ahead.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about the specific conditions would have to unfold to bring him back to management, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he said. “I don’t miss coaching; I avoid standing in the rain for lengthy sessions; I don’t miss going to press conferences repeatedly each week or doing numerous chats each week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room in that context, but sitting in a restaurant with the team having a nice chat, is pleasant. Success was frequent so there was often a very good mood around the place. I still have the captain's chuckle in my ear for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, praising him due to the changes which secured the championship last campaign. The team has suffered four consecutive matches across various tournaments after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the idea that it might signal a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. A remarkable prospect. [Hugo] Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built balanced team. No need for concern about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly about the death of Diogo Jota, a player he signed in 2020, and the effect for the team. The forward was killed in a car crash together with his sibling in July.
“How do you replace such an individual? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the dressing room missing him. Putting it into words is tough on this topic. It was an incredible shock for his teammates as well. Not a single person might employ it as an excuse though it's a fact. Entering the changing area which he filled completely. Handling this on a personal level is challenging. Unbearable.”
