Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
