The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
